In 1990, the brand Sherpa Pet's Trading Company was founded by Gayle Martz.  Gayle was inspired to begin this company by her Lhasa Apso named Sherpa.  Gayle was searching in vain for a soft pet carrier to allow Sherpa to accompany her on her travels.  When she could not find an adequate pet carrier, Gayle designed her own which was the beginning of a new era in pet travel.  This first design was only the beginning as now pet carriers by Sherpa have become a household name in the pet industry. 

Since Gayle's first design, Sherpa Pet's Trading Company, now called the Sherpa Pet Group, also boasts of being the first pet carrier company to have airline approved Sherpa pet carriers.  This achievement is attributed in part to Gayle's twenty years' experience in the airline industry.  Because of Gayle's ingenuity, pet owners no longer necessarily have to be separated from their small pets during air travel.  Their pet can join them in the cabin in one of the many Sherpa pet carriers offered.  The major airlines that approve many of the models of Sherpa pet carriers are the following: Air Canada, Alaska, American, America West, Continental, Delta, Northwest, United, and US Airways.
