The first and most important tip we can give you about these products is this: SIZE MATTERS. This is true in two important areas, one of which is often overlooked by consumers.
The size of your pet: It is the size of your pet that counts - not his or her weight -- when you are trying to figure out if the flap entrance is going to be large enough for your 4-legged friend to pass through.
It is confusing, really, that manufacturer's always include weight recommendations with these products. Our advice: ignore weight recommendations.
Instead, you need to measure your pet and then compare the measurements with the exact dimensions of any product you are thinking about purchasing. The last thing you want to do is complete an installation only to find that the flap entrance is too small!
A 100% reliable way to make absolutely sure if the flap entrance is the right size is to cut a hole out of a piece of cardboard that equals the flap size dimensions. If your pet can walk through the hole you cut in the cardboard, then the flap size is correct.
Another great tip for measuring the width of your pet is to open a door just enough for him or her to walk through comfortably. Then measure that space to determine the proper width of the flap entrance.
You would not believe how many people forget to consider whether or not a flap entrance is the right size. Our guess is it's because they are concentrating so hard on...
...The size of the door, wall, screen, or sliding glass door.
This is, of course, an important measurement as well. Determining the correct overall size for a pet door is fairly straightforward when you are installing in a door. Just compare the overall size of the doggy door with the space on the door where you intend to install it.
If you are considering a product for your sliding glass doors, you'll want to be sure it can be accommodated in the track that your slider sits in; is the track wide enough? Generally, if your slider is a single pane, you'll need to get a single pane patio door insert. If your slider is a double pane, you'll need a double pane patio door insert for a snug fit.
It's also important to measure the height of your slider and compare with the height of the product you are considering. Many are adjustable and/or custom made so it's very easy to get one that's the right height for you.
Note: Some patio inserts will not work with vinyl doors. If that is the case it is clearly indicated in the product descriptions you find at PetFrenzy.
If installation is to be through a wall, you'll want to make sure that the wall mount pet door you purchase can accommodate the thickness of your wall.
